What Triggers Your AirPods’ Chirps and Ways to Mute Them
Apple’s wireless earbuds are now a common companion for commuters and gym‑goers alike, yet an occasional high‑pitched chirp may surprise users. Though many people think the tone indicates a low‑battery alert, the short beep can actually originate from several distinct system notifications embedded in the AirPods and iOS.
In addition to the well‑known low‑power alert, AirPods produce chirps when they are returned to their charging case, when the case reaches a full charge, or when the earbuds sense they have been abandoned and the Find My network is trying to find them. The tone also signals that a firmware update is pending, informing users that the devices will soon reboot and install the new software.
Apple added most of these audio cues to enhance usability, particularly for people who aren’t glancing at their phone. For example, the Find My function can emit a brief tone from the earbuds to aid in locating them when they’re lost. Likewise, the beep that signals a full charge confirms to users that the case is prepared for the next session without requiring a glance at the LED light.
Nevertheless, the chirps are optional and can be turned off by users who find them annoying. iOS offers a simple method to mute most of these notifications: go to Settings, select Bluetooth, find the AirPods listing, press the information icon, and switch off the “Announce Notifications” toggle, which also silences the related sounds. Users may also decrease the general alert volume for AirPods through Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > Alert Volume, or just lower the iPhone’s media volume before putting the earbuds back into the case.
To silence the Find My‑related tone, the sound can be disabled by turning off the Find My network for that device. This is achieved by going to Settings > [User’s name] > Find My > My Devices, choosing the AirPods, and switching off “Find My network.” This prevents the earbuds from emitting a locating chirp, but it also eliminates the capability to track them via Apple’s crowd‑sourced network.
Knowing the reasons behind AirPods chirps and how to manage the alerts enables users to customize their listening experience. Whether one prefers to retain the beeps as handy reminders or to enjoy uninterrupted audio, Apple’s settings provide sufficient flexibility to handle the sounds without compromising the convenience that originally made the earbuds so popular.
