Microsoft merges its Forza teams into a single studio
In a statement released today, Microsoft said that its two Forza development outfits—Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios—are being combined into one studio as part of a wider Xbox reorganization. This consolidation unites the teams behind the open‑world Forza Horizon franchise and the simulation‑oriented Forza Motorsport series under a single umbrella.
Founded in 2010, Playground Games built a reputation for the Horizon series’ vast, festival‑like racing environments, whereas Turn 10, which dates back to 2001, has delivered the meticulously engineered Motorsport games that appeal to die‑hard racing fans. Together, the two studios have helped cement the Forza brand as one of the console’s top‑selling racing franchises, issuing yearly titles that blend authentic vehicle dynamics with polished production.
This merger comes on the heels of a broad restructuring of Xbox’s gaming divisions disclosed earlier this year, intended to streamline development pipelines and tighten focus on marquee experiences. By cutting administrative layers and consolidating leadership, Microsoft aims to speed up decision‑making and distribute resources more effectively throughout its first‑party lineup.
Under the new arrangement, the unified studio will focus on the Forza Horizon franchise as well as the forthcoming Fable title, signalling a strategic tilt toward games that stress open‑world roaming and richer storytelling. Analysts point out that Horizon’s robust sales and wider audience reach likely influenced the move, while the Motorsport series may adopt a slower release rhythm or eventually be folded into Horizon’s expansive worlds in later versions.
While the merger does not mean the Motorsport name will disappear overnight, it does imply that Microsoft will reassess how to juggle the series’ simulation heritage with Horizon’s commercial drive. Players can anticipate ongoing support for current games as the merged team develops next‑gen releases that draw on shared technology and expertise. As the Xbox landscape continues to change, the consolidated Forza studio is set to present a more unified vision for racing titles, possibly influencing the genre’s trajectory for years ahead.
