Drone Attacks on Yandex Data Centers Trigger Cloud Outage
Yandex, the leading Russian cloud services provider, acknowledged a broad service disruption after unmanned aerial vehicles struck three of its data centers, leading to the closure of two sites and a limited outage at the remaining one.
Yandex explained that the hits inflicted structural harm on essential infrastructure, compelling its engineers to suspend activity at the compromised locations in order to safeguard data integrity and avert additional loss. Consequently, Yandex Cloud customers were unable to reach their files, virtual machines, and associated services in several regions.
The firm noted that the impacted centers sit in western Russia, an area that has experienced an uptick in drone activity over the last year. Although the precise motive behind the assaults is still unknown, Yandex stressed that the events seem to be isolated incidents, not components of a larger coordinated cyber operation.
Clients reported being unable to fetch documents, execute workloads, or sync data with Yandex’s productivity suite. The disruption, which started late Thursday night, continued into Friday morning, leading the company to release a public statement detailing its remediation strategy and advising users to follow official channels for further information.
Analysts point out that the incident highlights escalating physical‑security concerns for cloud providers, particularly those running extensive data centers in geopolitically tense zones. Dependence on tangible infrastructure means hardware attacks can produce swift, observable impacts on digital services, a hazard that operators are now compelled to reevaluate.
Yandex committed to reinstating complete service promptly, referencing redundant systems and standby facilities that will be activated after safety checks are finished. It also disclosed that it is reassessing its security measures, such as bolstering perimeter surveillance and collaborating with local officials to prevent future attacks. Users are urged to keep local backups of essential data and to follow Yandex’s status page for ongoing updates.
