WhatsApp introduces shareable event links for non‑app users

WhatsApp is broadening its event‑planning features by enabling hosts to create invitation links that can be shared with people who haven’t installed the messenger.

Whereas the current event tool requires every participant to be on WhatsApp, the new link can be opened by anyone with a web browser. Guests can check the event information, RSVP, and receive updates without downloading the app, reducing the friction for group organization.

The addition arrives amid Meta’s larger push to keep WhatsApp on par with competitors like Telegram and Signal, both of which already allow cross‑platform group and channel invitations. By making it easier to bring new people into a chat, Meta aims to keep its current base and lure occasional users who might otherwise migrate to rival services for planning events.

Privacy watchdogs warn that the capability could create data‑privacy issues, since a public URL might be circulated beyond the intended audience. WhatsApp counters that each link is generated uniquely per event, can be cancelled by the organizer at any moment, and that all messages remain end‑to‑end encrypted for users who are on the app.

Analysts interpret the change as a reaction to feedback that the existing event workflow feels too closed. Small firms, families and community organisations often find it hard to arrange meet‑ups when not all members use WhatsApp. The link‑based invitations are meant to smooth those processes while preserving the core messaging experience.

The functionality is being introduced gradually over the next weeks, first to Android and iOS users in a handful of markets before a worldwide rollout. As it spreads, observers will monitor adoption speed and its effect on overall engagement numbers.
