Waymo to Test Driverless Ride‑Hailing in Toronto
Alphabet’s self‑driving car division Waymo said it will extend its robotaxi initiative outside the U.S., beginning a trial on Toronto’s streets, which will be the firm’s inaugural venture into Canada.
During the forthcoming tests the Waymo vehicles will run without an onboard safety driver, advancing beyond prior pilots that relied on a standby operator. The city has issued a short‑term permit permitting the cars to travel through traffic while they gather performance and safety data.
After evaluating multiple North American locales, regulators chose Toronto, pointing to its established autonomous‑vehicle testing framework and its dedication to progressive mobility. Its compact urban layout and varied roadways are seen as a demanding testbed for the technology.
Analysts observe that this step mirrors a wider pattern of driverless‑car firms broadening test sites as they near market launch. Waymo’s entry into Canada is intended to capture local data that may guide subsequent moves into other areas with comparable regulations.
Although the trial will start on a small scale, officials said positive results could pave the way for a wider rollout, possibly linking Waymo’s service with public transit or providing on‑demand rides to residents. Future actions will include continuous data review, safety evaluations, and discussions with city officials to assess the feasibility of a lasting robotaxi operation in Toronto.
