Waymo Restarts San Antonio Robotaxi Service After Flood-Related Shutdown

Waymo said Monday that its driverless‑car service in San Antonio has resumed operations, ending a five‑month shutdown caused by the heavy floods that carried a robotaxi away in April.

The interruption started when intense rain triggered flash flooding along the River Walk corridor, a primary path for the fleet. A driverless vehicle was swept downstream, incurred major damage, and forced Waymo to suspend all rides while it reviewed safety measures and repaired the unit.

During the pause, Waymo collaborated with local officials, the Texas Department of Transportation and its own engineering staff to investigate the event and boost resilience to extreme weather. Authorities noted that the assessment resulted in improved waterproofing of vehicle electronics and updated routing software that avoids flood‑prone streets during severe storms.

The San Antonio comeback comes as the company expands its robotaxi program across multiple U.S. cities, competing with other autonomous and ride‑hailing services. Launched in late 2023, the San Antonio market has served as a proving ground for Waymo’s newest software release, featuring upgraded perception sensors and a stronger safety architecture.

Analysts see the restart as an encouraging sign for the autonomous‑driving industry, highlighting that a swift rebound from a high‑profile incident signals operational maturity. Waymo has not revealed how many vehicles are currently on the road, but it said service levels will climb gradually as demand recovers. Residents and visitors can again book rides via the Waymo app, with the fleet expected to meet the same safety standards applied in its nationwide rollouts.
