UKRI Grants £15 Million for Zero‑Emission Testing at Belfast Harbour

UKRI Grants £15 Million for Zero‑Emission Testing at Belfast Harbour

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has set aside £15 million to fund zero‑emission trials at Belfast Harbour, representing a major move toward decarbonising maritime operations in the area.

The money is drawn from the Local Innovation Partnerships Fund, a UKRI programme intended to encourage joint research and development within local economies. By directing capital toward projects tackling regional issues, the fund seeks to speed up the shift to low‑carbon technologies throughout the United Kingdom.

At Belfast Harbour, the grant will finance experiments with electric and hydrogen‑propelled vessels, together with shore‑side power supplies that let ships plug in while at berth. The trials aim to assess performance, reliability and cost‑efficiency, generating data that may guide broader uptake of clean‑fuel technologies in commercial shipping.

The harbour, an important logistics centre for Northern Ireland, processes a large amount of cargo and passenger traffic annually. Cutting emissions from its activities could boost local air quality, bring the port into line with new environmental rules, and strengthen its competitiveness as worldwide trade leans toward greener supply chains.

Maritime transport contributes a significant portion of the UK’s greenhouse‑gas emissions, and the industry is under growing pressure to achieve national climate targets, notably the legally binding aim to reduce emissions by 68 percent by 2030. Programs like this testing initiative are seen as crucial for achieving the technological advances required to reach those objectives.

The project is set to involve port authorities, ship operators, technology companies and academic institutions. In the next months they will devise test protocols, install the required infrastructure and launch sea‑trials, with results to be disseminated to industry stakeholders and policymakers.

UKRI has signalled that the results of the Belfast Harbour trials will influence future funding choices and may open the door to larger‑scale roll‑outs at other UK ports. Tracking the outcomes will create a benchmark for judging the practicality of zero‑emission vessels in real‑world settings, guiding both commercial investment and regulatory policy.
