Ugreen NAS Adds HDMI Output, Turning Drive Into Media Player Controlled by Phone

Ugreen’s newest network‑attached storage (NAS) model features an HDMI port, allowing users to plug the unit straight into a TV or monitor and play the stored media without needing a computer.

Once the NAS is linked to a screen, it behaves like a basic media hub: movies, music and photos stored on the drive are shown on the display, while a companion smartphone app governs playback. Acting as a remote, the app lets users browse folders, pick files, tweak volume and organize playlists while seated on the couch.

This design move by Ugreen mirrors a wider shift among consumer‑grade NAS makers toward multimedia‑oriented capabilities that suit home‑entertainment environments. Although classic NAS units focus on backup, file sharing and cloud‑style access, the HDMI connection broadens their role by delivering a plug‑and‑play viewing experience akin to standalone media players.

Connecting via HDMI is simple. After plugging in the NAS’s power cord and connecting it to the home network, users plug an HDMI cable from the unit into a TV or monitor. When the screen picks up the signal, the Ugreen app—provided for iOS and Android—walks the user through pairing the phone with the NAS over the local Wi‑Fi.

Since the smartphone serves as the remote, a distinct infrared or Bluetooth controller isn’t required. This method also permits the interface to be refreshed remotely through app updates, maintaining an up‑to‑date navigation experience without altering the NAS’s firmware.

Analysts observe that adding HDMI could broaden appeal, especially among families wanting to combine storage and media playback in one unit. Still, they warn that the capability is geared toward casual streaming and may fall short for high‑end gaming or 4K HDR video, which typically require stronger hardware.

Going forward, Ugreen hasn’t disclosed any intentions to introduce extra video outputs or advanced audio format support, yet its roadmap hints that upcoming firmware upgrades might boost compatibility with major streaming platforms and subtitle management.

At present, Ugreen NAS owners can take advantage of an easy, affordable method to transform their media collection into a living‑room setup, requiring just a TV, an HDMI cable and their phone as a remote.
