Trump Strikes Diesel Deal with Russia Amid Rising US Fuel Prices Ahead of Midterms

On Thursday, ex‑president Donald Trump said he has struck a pact with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to deliver a consignment of Russian diesel to the United States, a step he claims could help temper the steep climb in fuel prices weighing on U.S. motorists and firms.

Since the Iran conflict began in February, diesel rates nationwide have about doubled, squeezing profit margins for trucking companies, inflating delivery expenses for retailers, and prompting grievances from commuters who depend on diesel‑driven transport.

The surge in prices comes at a pivotal time for the GOP, which is contending with growing scrutiny of its energy agenda as the 2026 midterm contests draw near. Legislators from both parties are fielding inquiries from voters about the impact of climbing transportation costs on family finances and the wider economy.

Washington’s ties with Moscow have long been tense, with multiple sanctions curbing Russia’s capacity to ship energy products. Yet this latest deal seems to create a narrow exemption, permitting a defined amount of diesel to be exported without breaching current sanctions, officials familiar with the plan said.

Experts suggest the arrangement might offer temporary easing for the U.S. diesel market, though its lasting effect will hinge on how much fuel is delivered and how quickly it reaches consumers. Lawmakers are likely to examine the pact for adherence to sanctions regulations, and the administration could confront political pressure to show that the initiative leads to lower pump prices before the electorate goes to the polls.
