Tether Launches Small Offline AI Translators for Mobile Phones and Laptops

Tether AI Research has introduced a fresh collection of cost‑free translation models that operate wholly on users’ own devices, removing any reliance on an online link. Aimed at both smartphones and laptops, the suite lets people translate text locally without routing data through cloud platforms.

The lead product, named AfriSLM, is built for African languages and handles 19 different tongues. Prior to training, Tether trimmed roughly 96 % of low‑quality entries from its dataset, a move designed to improve precision while keeping the model light enough for on‑device use.

Alongside the African offering, Tether presented EuroNano, a multilingual engine supporting 90 translation pairs and occupying only 36 MB of storage. This tiny size enables installation on modest hardware without compromising speed, marking a clear step forward from many cloud‑dependent solutions that demand constant connectivity and larger disk space.

The launch arrives as many regions—especially parts of Africa and other remote locales—still struggle with spotty internet service. By providing offline translation, Tether hopes to lower language barriers for users lacking steady broadband, potentially widening access to educational material, business communication, and information in underserved areas.

Analysts point out that offering the models free of charge could encourage wider uptake among developers and NGOs looking for affordable language tools. Freely available or open‑source models often speed up integration into bespoke apps, from health‑care systems to local news feeds, extending their impact without the burden of licensing costs.

Looking forward, Tether says upcoming releases will aim to add more languages and further improve model efficiency. As on‑device AI matures, the company’s approach highlights a growing shift toward privacy‑friendly, low‑latency solutions that function independently of cloud infrastructure.
