New research suggests that adolescents who begin using cannabis may experience a notable slowdown in the development of crucial cognitive functions. Areas such as memory, attention span, language proficiency, and information processing speed appear to exhibit less growth in these young users compared to their non-using peers.
The findings indicate a specific pattern where cognitive abilities in cannabis-using teenagers initially progress at a normal rate. However, at some point, their development in these key areas appears to plateau or decelerate significantly, while the cognitive skills of adolescents who do not use cannabis continue to improve steadily over the same period. This divergence points to a potential interference with the natural trajectory of brain maturation during a critical developmental window.
While the study does not definitively establish causation, the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, is highlighted as the most probable factor driving these observed cognitive shifts. THC is the primary intoxicating ingredient in cannabis and is known to interact with the brain's endocannabinoid system, which plays a vital role in brain development and function.
