Starlink Service Fully Restored in Ukraine After Disruptive Slowdown
Ukraine reported that the Starlink internet connection is now completely back online following a recent slowdown that President Volodymyr Zelensky described as painful and frustrating.
The bandwidth reduction, which started earlier this month, impeded civilian communications and military coordination, sparking worries over the dependability of the satellite link that has served as a digital lifeline since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Operated by SpaceX, Starlink was introduced in Ukraine to circumvent ruined terrestrial networks, providing high‑speed connectivity for government broadcasts, medical services and battlefield drones.
Authorities identified a temporary bottleneck at regional ground stations as the cause of the slowdown. SpaceX engineers responded by rerouting traffic and boosting capacity, enabling the network to regain its normal throughput.
Zelensky stressed that continuous internet access is vital for command, control and public information, labeling the outage as "painful and frustrating" for both the armed forces and ordinary citizens.
The reinstatement comes as Kyiv readies a new stage of its counter‑offensive, depending on real‑time intelligence and secure communications. Analysts caution that any future outage could reveal weaknesses in Ukraine’s digital defence architecture.
SpaceX has committed to maintaining a dedicated bandwidth allocation for Ukraine and is investigating options to broaden satellite coverage across Eastern Europe, while NATO allies persist in evaluating further support for satellite‑based connectivity in conflict zones.
