SpaceX Considers Buying Boost Mobile to Broaden Its Cellular Reach

SpaceX, the aerospace company famed for its Falcon rockets and the Starlink satellite internet platform, is said to be negotiating a purchase of Boost Mobile, the budget wireless provider owned by Dish Network.

According to industry insiders, the deal would hand SpaceX an existing array of cell sites and spectrum holdings, resources that could dovetail with its satellite broadband system. Merging Boost’s ground‑based infrastructure with Starlink would allow the firm to launch a combined offering capable of competing with the entrenched U.S. operators AT&T, T‑Mobile and Verizon.

Since Dish acquired Boost Mobile in 2020, the carrier has found it difficult to preserve its market share, yet it carries roughly 10 million customers and holds spectrum in the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands. These bands are prized for 5G roll‑outs and could allow SpaceX to provide fast data service in cities where satellite latency and reach are less favorable.

Analysts observe that SpaceX is actively exploring revenue streams for Starlink beyond home broadband, such as maritime, aviation and business solutions. A unified satellite‑and‑cellular product would tackle a long‑standing gripe about satellite internet—its poor penetration in dense urban settings and indoor spaces.

Securing regulatory clearance would pose a major obstacle, with the Federal Communications Commission required to assess the deal for antitrust issues. Should it obtain approval, the purchase could alter the market dynamics, compelling the Big Three telecoms to face a newcomer that merges space‑borne and terrestrial technologies. The transaction is slated for a possible announcement later this year, although neither side has confirmed a formal bid.
