Sony Rolls Out Clear PS5 Gear to Showcase Console’s Inner Workings
Sony unveiled a fresh series of transparent accessories for its PlayStation 5, including a crystal‑clear DualSense controller and a see‑through console cover that reveal the internal hardware.
The see‑through controller keeps the familiar ergonomic shape and haptic feedback of the regular DualSense, while its clear housing displays the circuit boards, battery and wiring inside; the matching transparent shell clicks onto the PS5, letting users see the disc drive, cooling system and other components without opening the unit.
The release comes as Sony doubles down on its digital‑first approach to gaming. In recent years, digital game sales have steadily climbed while physical disc purchases have fallen, prompting the company to make the disc drive feel less central to the console experience.
Beyond being a novelty, the clear accessories serve a marketing goal: they showcase the console’s engineering craftsmanship and reinforce Sony’s reputation as a design‑oriented brand. By turning the inner workings into a visual feature, Sony hopes to appeal to collectors and gamers who favor a more tech‑savvy look.
Analysts observe that this move mirrors a wider shift in the video‑game industry, where makers are gradually moving away from physical media to lower production costs, simplify supply chains and address environmental concerns tied to disc manufacturing and shipping.
Although the transparent gear doesn’t indicate an immediate end to disc support—Sony has affirmed the PS5 will still run physical games—the focus on the console’s interior could hint at future, slimmer, disc‑free models. For now, the see‑through accessories give owners a new way to customize their setups and catch a glimpse of the technology driving modern gaming.
