Sony equips base PS5 models with AI-powered upscaling feature
Sony revealed that the standard PlayStation 5 will now include Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-driven upscaling system intended to boost visual quality while maintaining performance.
By applying machine‑learning algorithms, QSSR rebuilds higher‑resolution frames from lower‑resolution inputs, letting games keep their native frame rates yet display crisper textures and richer detail. Because the upscaler operates at the system level, developers can activate it without overhauling extensive parts of their rendering code.
The initial pair of games demonstrating the feature are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Each title has received an update to support QSSR, granting players a clear increase in sharpness when enabled, particularly on 4K screens.
This step mirrors a wider industry trend toward AI‑augmented graphics. Rival consoles have already rolled out comparable tools, and the PC sector has experienced rapid adoption of AI upscalers like NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. Introducing a similar capability to the standard PS5 allows Sony to maintain competitiveness and prolong the relevance of current hardware.
Developers can gain from this console‑wide integration, since the upscaler may lessen the requirement for dedicated high‑resolution assets while still satisfying today’s visual standards. Sony has signaled that more games will be patched to incorporate QSSR via upcoming firmware updates, implying a gradual deployment rather than a single‑shot upgrade.
Analysts interpret the move as a tactical attempt to boost the appeal of the standard PS5, still the best‑selling variant. As additional titles adopt the technology, Sony’s audience could experience steady gains in visual fidelity throughout the catalog, which may sway buying choices for both prospective and current owners alike.
