Russian‑Developed Backdoor ‘HOOKEDGE’ Targets European Diplomatic and Defense Networks

Security analysts have uncovered a new Windows‑compatible backdoor, called HOOKEDGE, that Russian cyber‑operators are using in multiple espionage operations targeting diplomatic, governmental and defence‑related bodies throughout Europe.

The malware is apparently distributed via apparently harmless Microsoft Word files; opening one triggers a concealed payload. After deployment, HOOKEDGE grants the threat actors lasting remote control, enabling document theft, communication surveillance and lateral movement across the infiltrated network.

Investigations highlight a cluster of incidents in Romania, Spain and Turkey, where various ministries, embassies and defence contractors observed anomalous network activity. While the total volume of stolen data is still unknown, the breach of these high‑value entities sparks worries over possible exposure of classified diplomatic communications and strategic defence data.

HOOKEDGE adds to an expanding arsenal of Russia‑associated malware seen in recent years, such as the infamous NotPetya ransomware and the newer Inception framework. Analysts observe that employing a Word‑based delivery method underscores an ongoing dependence on social‑engineering techniques, leveraging users’ confidence in routine office documents to evade conventional security measures.

Cyber‑security authorities in the impacted countries have released warnings, advising entities to reassess email filters, implement macro‑blocking rules and install the newest patches for Microsoft Office products. Experts contend that increased alertness and joint information‑exchange among European partners will be crucial to curb additional intrusions and monitor the development of the HOOKEDGE platform.
