Robotic Golden Arowana Amazes CIFTIS 2026 Visitors, Highlights Spy and Conservation Potential

During this year’s China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), a sleek fish with silver‑scaled plating swam in a shallow tank, attracting attention and sparking curiosity about its identity. The exhibit featured the BG‑5 robotic golden arowana, a 640‑mm, 3‑kilogram autonomous unit built by Boyagongdao that reproduces the look and swimming motion of the coveted tropical species.

Unlike a living specimen, the BG‑5 carries an internal navigation system that enables it to chart its own path around obstacles in real time. Show presenters demonstrated the robot’s capacity to sense and circumvent barriers without any human control, a trait that underpins its advertised flexibility for both civilian and defence uses.

According to its technical data, the BG‑5 can operate down to depths of five metres and reach a top speed of 0.6 metres per second. Built‑in cameras and interchangeable payload bays allow the device to collect visual information or mount extra sensors, broadening its role beyond a simple display piece.

The lifelike façade and silent propulsion have caught the eye of military analysts who envision applications in covert surveillance or reconnaissance in littoral environments. A bionic fish that can blend in with natural marine fauna could, theoretically, approach hostile ships or observe coastal facilities while staying virtually undetectable.

Equally intriguing is the system’s potential for environmental protection. Conservation organisations have long faced difficulties policing extensive river networks and offshore reefs where illegal fishing and poaching are prevalent. A quiet, autonomous fish could be deployed to watch over protected waters, capture illicit activity, and stream live footage to authorities, providing a low‑profile alternative to conventional patrol vessels.

China has poured substantial resources into biomimetic robotics, a discipline that aims to imitate the efficient locomotion of animals for engineering ends. The BG‑5 follows earlier models that mimicked sharks, turtles and eels, each version improving power efficiency, control algorithms and sensor integration.

Although the robot is still in a demonstration phase, its showcase at CIFTIS reflects growing confidence among Chinese companies to commercialise such dual‑use technologies. Observers point out that regulatory frameworks for autonomous underwater systems remain in flux, and the use of bionic robots for surveillance is likely to spark debate over maritime security and privacy. The next milestone for the BG‑5 will be field trials, possibly alongside naval forces or wildlife agencies, to prove its performance in real‑world conditions.
