Record rains trigger deadly flooding in Istanbul, officials advise citizens to remain indoors

The provincial governor reports that unprecedented rainstorms, shattering an 84‑year record in Istanbul, have claimed two lives and led officials to counsel the public to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Meteorologists label the deluge—the strongest in eight decades—as having flooded low‑lying districts, overloaded the drainage network and rendered many streets unnavigable. Rising water poured into homes, entrapping residents and compelling emergency teams to launch rescue missions across the metropolis.

Prompted by distress calls, local rescue units, supported by volunteers, quickly extracted people from submerged dwellings and ferried the wounded to nearby hospitals. Following the calamity, the governor released a public notice urging citizens to forgo non‑essential trips, keep windows closed, and obey civil protection directives.

Because Istanbul spans the Bosphorus and lies close to the Black Sea, it is especially vulnerable to flash floods, a danger that spikes when heavy rain meets high tides. Although the city has endured comparable incidents before, climate specialists warn that growing weather volatility is heightening the likelihood of such severe occurrences.

Officials continue to track forecasts for more rain while deploying extra resources to remove debris, shore up at‑risk infrastructure and set up temporary shelters for families forced from their homes. They stressed that conditions are still evolving and promised further bulletins as rescue and recovery operations proceed.
