Post‑Tropical Isaias Leaves Four Dead as Floods and Tornado Risks Sweep the Southeast

Post‑tropical Cyclone Isaias, which hit Florida's Gulf Coast on Saturday, has been tied to at least four fatalities as it tracked northward through the southeastern United States, unleashing a hazardous blend of heavy rain, flash flooding and tornado potential.

Emergency officials said the storm’s rain bands caused widespread inundation across coastal counties in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. In several spots, water levels rose fast enough to strand motorists and force evacuations from low‑lying neighborhoods, prompting rescue crews to wade through knee‑deep floodwaters to reach those trapped.

The confirmed deaths comprise two people swept away in a rapidly rising creek in Georgia, a senior citizen who could not escape a flooded home in South Carolina, and a construction worker injured by a downed tree in North Carolina. Authorities have not ruled out additional casualties as search and recovery efforts continue.

Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center warned that, although Isaias is no longer a tropical cyclone, it still carries enough moisture to spawn isolated tornadoes. Small‑scale vortices have already touched down in central Florida, damaging roofs and power lines, and the risk remains elevated as the system moves further inland.

Local governments have opened emergency shelters and urged residents to avoid traveling on flooded roads. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is monitoring the situation and stands ready to assist counties that request federal aid. Utility companies are working to restore power knocked out by downed poles, while the Army Corps of Engineers has deployed extra resources to reinforce levees and manage river flows.

Isaias is expected to weaken as it proceeds inland, but forecasters caution that its remnants could still produce several more inches of rain over the next few days, extending flood danger into the Mid‑Atlantic region. The storm underscores the growing challenges posed by post‑tropical systems that, despite losing their tropical classification, continue to deliver life‑threatening conditions across large swaths of the United States.
