Oukitel Unveils WP63 Rugged Smartphone, Review Highlights Odd Model Numbering and Sturdy Build

In its newest hands‑on review, TechRadar spotlights the Oukitel WP63, the latest addition to the Chinese brand's rugged phone lineup, and notes that it follows the higher‑numbered WP66, highlighting the company's atypical naming convention.

Oukitel has carved out a market segment by catering to users who require a device capable of withstanding drops, dust, water and extreme temperatures. Its phones enjoy popularity among field professionals, outdoor hobbyists and people living in harsh climates, where a durable handset can outweigh the appeal of a flagship’s cutting‑edge camera.

Staying true to that legacy, the WP63 sports a reinforced frame, carries an IP68 water‑resistance rating, and houses a battery that TechRadar says can power a full day of intensive use. The review also points out that the screen stays readable under bright sunlight and that the phone delivers reliable performance for routine tasks, even though it doesn’t chase the newest processor scores.

The most striking aspect, however, is the apparently reversed numbering. Although the WP66 hit the market months before, the newer WP63 seems positioned as a successor rather than an earlier model. Oukitel has not provided an official rationale, and the review speculates that the numbering might mirror internal development timelines instead of release order, a practice that may puzzle shoppers tracking the series.

For buyers, the main conclusion is that the WP63 offers the ruggedness Oukitel is known for while retaining essential smartphone functions, irrespective of its slot in the lineup. Analysts will be watching to see if the company clarifies its naming approach in upcoming models, as a clearer product hierarchy could enable it to better compete with other rugged phone makers and broaden its reach beyond its current core base.
