New Research Reveals “American Cheetah” Was Actually a Puma Relative
Scientists have upended a decades‑old view of Miracinonyx trumani, the extinct North American cat often dubbed the "American cheetah." A study published in Current Biology contends that its slender form and long fore‑limbs do not indicate a close kinship with Africa’s cheetah, but instead place it solidly within a separate felid branch.
The animal, which inhabited the Pleistocene prairies of present‑day United States, was identified in the twentieth century and swiftly acquired the moniker due to its body outline resembling that of Acinonyx jubatus. Researchers at the time invoked convergent evolution, proposing that unrelated lineages had independently evolved similar features to chase swift prey.
In this latest investigation, a coalition of vertebrate paleontologists and geneticists revisited the fossil record, concentrating on skull and tooth characteristics that serve as more dependable markers of lineage than limb size alone. Their comparative work spanned extinct North American felids as well as extant species, and they bolstered the morphological assessment with ancient DNA snippets extracted from exceptionally preserved bone.
The findings indicate that Miracinonyx possesses more advanced traits in common with the cougar line (Puma concolor) than with the genuine cheetah. Particular dental features—like the form of the carnassial teeth—and genetic markers locate the "American cheetah" inside the Puma‑associated branch, implying it split from a shared ancestor with today’s cougars rather than from the cheetah family tree.
This revised view reshapes how researchers conceive predator interactions across ancient North American grasslands. Should Miracinonyx be nearer to cougars, its predatory tactics likely diverged from the rapid chases typical of cheetahs, perhaps favoring ambush or brief acceleration. This conceptual shift also influences ecosystem models, altering the perceived functions of coexisting herbivores such as the American bison and the extinct giant ground sloth.
The research highlights the difficulty of assigning extinct taxa to lineages based purely on outward form, particularly when convergent evolution generates deceptive similarities. It also showcases the expanding power of ancient DNA to clarify phylogenetic ties that bone morphology by itself cannot resolve.
