NASA Sets Up First Noise Test of X‑59 Quiet Supersonic Jet for This Year
NASA said it will carry out a noise‑assessment of its X‑59 Quiet Supersonic Technology aircraft later this year, intending to gauge how much quieter the prototype is relative to traditional supersonic aircraft.
Constructed by Lockheed Martin as part of NASA’s Quiet Supersonic Technology program, the X‑59 is designed to convert the classic “sonic boom” into a gentler “sonic thump” by dispersing the shock wave across a greater span using a uniquely shaped fuselage and an extended nose.
In the forthcoming trial, the jet will traverse a prescribed corridor while a network of ground‑based microphones captures its acoustic signature, enabling engineers to contrast the field data with previous wind‑tunnel and simulation findings.
If the aircraft satisfies its noise objectives, NASA intends to forward the results to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is examining new rules that might someday permit supersonic flights over land. Existing regulations ban commercial supersonic travel over inhabited regions due to disruptive booms.
This initiative aligns with a broader drive to resurrect commercial supersonic travel following the Concorde’s retirement in 2003. Industry watchers consider a quieter jet crucial for viable market routes, particularly within the United States.
Aside from the technical aims, NASA plans to employ the X‑59 to gather data on public perception of low‑level sonic events, insights that will inform future certification and regulatory procedures.
The flight is scheduled for later this year, subject to final clearance. NASA officials note the aircraft has already undergone extensive ground testing and a brief series of flight checks, setting the stage for the acoustic measurement campaign.
Should the test confirm the design, it may pave the way for a second‑generation prototype and ultimately a commercial model, possibly reopening trans‑oceanic routes at supersonic speeds without the noise penalties that ended earlier efforts.
Stakeholders will monitor the result closely, as it could mark a turning point for the supersonic sector and for regulators aiming to balance technological advancement with community impact.
