Musk Accuses Reliance Tycoon of Delaying Starlink Launch in India
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and its satellite internet division Starlink, publicly accused Indian magnate Mukesh Ambani of hindering the service’s deployment in India, claiming that Reliance’s market power is being wielded to suppress competition.
For years, Starlink has pursued permission to work in India, contending with a regulatory framework that obliges overseas satellite firms to join forces with an Indian partner. In 2023, it disclosed a tie‑up with Reliance Jio, the telecommunications subsidiary of Ambani’s Reliance Industries, to satisfy the nation’s licensing rules.
Reliance Jio, currently India’s biggest mobile network operator, commands a large portion of the country’s data and broadband sector. Observers have cautioned that the alliance might grant the conglomerate an excessive edge, possibly restricting other foreign satellite entrants and concentrating earnings within the prevailing telecom landscape.
In a recent interview, Musk asserted that Starlink’s launch postponement was not caused by technical issues but resulted from “deliberate obstruction” by Ambani, whom he said was “blocking competition.” Reported by TechCrunch, these remarks echo rising irritation at SpaceX regarding what it views as an uneven playing field in one of the globe’s quickest‑expanding digital markets.
Indian regulators have remained silent on Musk’s claims, yet the Department of Telecommunications continues to assess filings from multiple satellite operators as demands grow for a more liberal broadband environment. The decision on Starlink’s pending permit may establish a benchmark for foreign satellite companies’ collaborations with Indian partners and determine if the government will apply tighter anti‑monopoly protections.
Analysts point out that the clash highlights wider frictions between international tech firms and home‑grown conglomerates in emerging economies. Should Starlink finally obtain a launch licence, it could bring affordable, high‑speed connectivity to neglected areas, putting pressure on Reliance Jio’s pricing dominance. On the other hand, ongoing postponements could cement the current landscape, leaving India’s broadband sector largely under the grip of incumbent operators. In the coming weeks, it will become clear whether Musk’s outspoken critique spurs regulatory movement or deepens the impasse between the two corporate giants.
