Scientists at the University of Malaga have introduced a diagnostic system that employs magnetic nanoparticles to detect allergic responses to beta‑lactam antibiotics, including amoxicillin, achieving a sensitivity of 98 % in early lab tests.

The multidisciplinary team—spanning nanotechnology, immunology and clinical medicine—engineered the assay to selectively bind IgE antibodies responsible for penicillin‑type drug hypersensitivity. By attaching small magnetic particles to fragments of the allergen, the method can capture and measure patient antibodies within minutes, offering a swifter alternative to traditional skin‑prick or serum‑specific IgE tests that often take hours and may yield unclear outcomes.

Beta‑lactam antibiotics constitute the most widely prescribed drug class globally, yet a notable share of people experience adverse reactions. Precise diagnosis matters because incorrectly labeling someone as allergic can push clinicians toward broader‑spectrum antibiotics, fueling antimicrobial resistance and raising healthcare expenses. This nanoparticle‑based approach seeks to lower false‑positive rates and give physicians a dependable point‑of‑care tool for decision‑making.

In the investigation, blood drawn from volunteers with a confirmed amoxicillin allergy and from non‑allergic subjects was examined using the magnetic assay. The investigators reported that the test correctly identified 98 of 100 allergic participants while preserving a low false‑negative incidence. Although these findings are preliminary and derived from a controlled laboratory environment, the authors note that the technique’s rapidity, minimal sample need, and scalability could support wider clinical use after larger validation studies.

Future work will broaden trials to cover additional beta‑lactam agents, evaluate performance across varied patient groups, and explore coupling the assay with portable diagnostic devices. Should later studies verify its precision, the magnetic nanoparticle platform could become a standard screening method in hospitals and primary‑care settings, streamlining allergy management and reducing unnecessary prescriptions of alternative antibiotics.
