LG Denies Allegations Its Smart TVs Capture Conversations Without Permission

LG Electronics publicly refutes claims that its smart TVs constantly record viewers' audio for advertising, stressing that any data gathering occurs only with the user's explicit consent.

The dispute originated from several web reports alleging that LG's units were eavesdropping on home conversations and sending the data to external advertisers. Observers have highlighted wider privacy worries about internet‑connected televisions, which are capable of collecting viewing patterns, voice commands and possibly ambient audio.

LG replied with a statement saying its devices only record audio when the owner has deliberately turned on features like voice‑assistant services. The firm noted that its privacy policy specifies the conditions for data collection and that users receive unmistakable opt‑in prompts before any microphone is engaged.

Consumer‑advocacy organizations have repeatedly cautioned that smart‑TV makers might misuse built‑in microphones to construct detailed consumer profiles. Comparable allegations have been directed at other manufacturers, leading data‑protection regulators in multiple regions to launch inquiries. Yet, no solid proof has surfaced connecting LG's hardware to systematic, non‑consensual audio monitoring.

Analysts point out that the push to monetize user data is prompting many makers to embed increasingly advanced voice and recommendation systems. Although such tools can improve the viewing experience, they also heighten the need for clear consent processes. LG's rebuttal highlights the fine line firms must walk between delivering convenient functionalities and honoring privacy expectations.

Going forward, regulators could pursue more explicit rules on how smart‑TV producers manage audio data, and consumer groups are expected to keep watching the industry for compliance. At present, LG asserts that its devices function within the limits of user consent and encourages owners to check their privacy settings to match their personal preferences.
