Indonesia’s Forest Loss Accelerates as Japan’s Biomass Appetite Grows
Satellite images released this week reveal a pronounced surge in forest clearing throughout Indonesia as the nation scales up production of wood pellets and chips for Japan’s expanding biomass electricity market.
According to analysts, the fresh imagery shows extensive tracts of once‑pristine tropical forest being turned into timber plantations and processing facilities, echoing earlier studies that linked Indonesia’s wood‑fuel shipments to carbon‑heavy energy projects overseas.
Japan, which has pledged to swap coal for renewable power, has embraced biomass as a seemingly low‑carbon substitute. Generous government subsidies and a supportive feed‑in tariff have driven utilities to import massive volumes of wood‑based fuel, prompting Indonesian exporters to boost production to satisfy the demand.
The push comes at a steep price for Indonesia’s biodiversity. The archipelago harbors some of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems, and the newly cleared zones encompass habitats for threatened species such as the Sumatran orangutan and the Javan rhinoceros. Indigenous peoples, whose way of life relies on forest resources, also confront displacement and the loss of cultural sites.
Environmental organisations caution that the carbon benefits touted for biomass could be negated by the emissions released when mature forests are cut down. The carbon debt generated by forest conversion may require decades to repay, jeopardising climate‑change mitigation objectives.
Indonesian officials acknowledge the pressure but point to existing rules aimed at curbing illegal logging and encouraging sustainable sourcing. Yet enforcement difficulties and the profitability of export deals have hampered compliance, leading to calls for tighter certification and traceability measures.
Looking forward, both governments confront a dilemma: reconciling Japan’s renewable‑energy goals with Indonesia’s forest‑conservation commitments. International watchdogs recommend transparent supply chains, third‑party verification, and investment in alternative renewables to break the deforestation cycle while still advancing energy transitions.
