How to Distinguish a Dead Pixel from a Stuck Pixel on Any Screen
Anyone who has spent enough time looking at a computer monitor, a smartphone or a TV eventually spots a minute dot that refuses to behave like the rest of the display. That dot is either a dead pixel or a stuck pixel, two separate defects that appear alike at first glance but stem from different causes and require different fixes.
A dead pixel is a sub‑pixel that no longer reacts to electrical signals, staying permanently dark no matter what image is shown. This usually results from a manufacturing flaw or physical damage that breaks the link to the liquid‑crystal or OLED element, so the pixel never emits light.
By contrast, a stuck pixel stays illuminated in a single hue—typically red, green or blue—because one of its sub‑pixels is locked in the “on” position. The underlying circuitry still works, meaning the pixel can sometimes be revived with software tricks or gentle pressure.
