Google tests AI‑powered shopping on Flipkart in India

Google has launched a small‑scale experiment allowing shoppers to buy certain products from Flipkart, the Indian marketplace owned by Walmart, straight via its Gemini AI model within the AI Mode UI. At present the test covers only a limited product range and a modest user cohort, with a broader launch slated for later October.

The hookup taps into Gemini’s dialogue features, letting customers request product suggestions, weigh specifications, and finalize purchases without exiting the chat window. By folding the checkout process into AI Mode, Google seeks to simplify the online‑shopping journey and assess whether conversational commerce can rival conventional app‑driven buying.

Holding a sizable portion of India’s e‑commerce sector, Flipkart has been broadening its ecosystem via alliances that introduce fresh technology to its site. Partnering with Google aligns with a wider industry shift toward weaving AI into purchasing pathways, a strategy that could accelerate consumer choices and boost conversion rates for sellers.

Analysts point out that the experiment arrives as both firms aim to deepen their foothold in India. Google’s Gemini, presented as the next generation after its prior language models, is touted as a pillar of the company’s generative‑AI roadmap. At the same time, Walmart is pouring substantial investment into Flipkart to tap the rapid expansion of mobile commerce in the nation.

Even though the pilot is in its infancy, the partners say the gathered data will guide scaling decisions. Indicators like shopper satisfaction, successful checkout rates, and the breadth of product types the AI can manage will influence the planned wider rollout in October.

Experts warn that AI‑based buying will hinge on issues such as price consistency, confidence in AI suggestions, and the capacity to address intricate questions like returns or warranty details. If the larger launch proves successful, it may herald a move toward more unified, voice‑centric shopping experiences for India’s swiftly digitising consumer population.
