Google Launches Universal Cart, Unifying Shopping Across Search and Gemini App in the United States

Google has introduced a shopping tool named Universal Cart for U.S. users, embedding it within both its core Search service and the Gemini AI chat application. The addition enables shoppers to gather products from a variety of retailers into a single, cloud‑based cart that can be reached from any Google‑driven interface, simplifying the journey from product discovery to purchase.

Universal Cart extends Google’s long‑standing push to weave commerce into its platforms. In the past, Search product listings would send users to merchant sites, but the new feature retains the buying process inside Google’s ecosystem up to the final checkout step. By aggregating items from different stores, the cart seeks to eliminate the hassle of juggling multiple tabs or apps when comparing prices.

Analysts observe that the rollout arrives as shoppers increasingly demand frictionless, cross‑platform buying experiences. The tie‑in with Gemini, Google’s conversational AI, lets users request the assistant to locate, contrast, and add products to their cart using everyday language. This mirrors the broader shift toward voice‑first and chat‑driven commerce, where AI tailors suggestions and steers purchasing choices.

For retailers, Universal Cart opens a fresh avenue to reach buyers without maintaining a dedicated Google storefront. Vendors already listing items via Google Shopping can now enjoy greater exposure as their products appear in a consolidated cart that follows users across search queries and chat interactions. Participation remains optional, and Google has not revealed any revenue‑sharing arrangement linked to cart transactions.

Privacy groups have questioned how cart data will be managed, especially given Google’s extensive advertising network. Google asserts the cart is securely stored within users’ Google accounts and that the information will solely enhance shopping relevance and deter fraud. Users retain the ability to review and delete cart contents at any moment, and the feature adheres to current U.S. privacy laws.

Looking forward, Google may roll Universal Cart out to additional regions and fuse it with services like Google Maps and YouTube, where product discovery already thrives. The launch signals Google’s ambition to take on e‑commerce platforms that provide full‑checkout solutions, while capitalizing on its massive search reach to keep shoppers inside its ecosystem longer.
