Google fixes Photos bug that hid Magic Eraser edits from other apps

An update to Google Photos has been rolled out, addressing a flaw that caused pictures edited with the Magic Eraser feature to remain invisible to third‑party apps. Delivered via the Play Store earlier this week, the patch reestablishes the normal operation where edited files show up together with their originals throughout Android.

The issue emerged after users employed Magic Eraser—a tool that erases unwanted elements from a shot—and then tried to share or open the resulting image in messaging, social networks, or external gallery applications. Rather than the retouched picture, the unchanged original appeared, causing many to think the edit had not been applied.

The glitch was first noted on internet forums and tech news outlets, with Engadget among the earliest to document the problem. User reports indicated that the fault stemmed from the way Photos wrote the edited image’s metadata, which ended up locating the new file where other apps do not look. Consequently, a gap formed between the editing workflow in Photos and the wider Android file system.

Google engineers pinpointed the metadata‑handling mistake and released a remedial update on Tuesday. The patch, automatically pushed to devices on the newest Android release, guarantees that edited pictures are stored in a conventional folder and become instantly visible to any application that accesses the device’s media library. Users should refresh Google Photos through the Play Store to obtain the correction.

The episode underscores the increasing dependence on built‑in editing utilities on mobile devices and the need for smooth interoperability. Although Google has not announced a schedule for a wider audit of comparable features, a company spokesperson said it will keep tracking user feedback and give stability priority in upcoming updates. At present, the fix that returns reliable image sharing bolsters trust in Magic Eraser and reaffirms Google’s dedication to a uniform user experience across its products.
