Global Law Enforcement Cracks Down on Phishing Operation Behind Over One Billion Emails

A coordinated effort by law‑enforcement bodies and cyber‑security allies worldwide has led to the dismantling of a massive criminal scheme that sent more than a billion phishing emails, impacting about 75,000 entities across 150 countries.

The operation involved simultaneous raids and the seizure of servers in multiple jurisdictions, tearing down the infrastructure that powered the high‑volume mail campaign. Officials say the result stems from months of joint investigation, technical surveillance, and data sharing among national police, intelligence agencies and private‑sector security firms.

The agencies say the hijacked network was employed to distribute a range of malicious payloads, from credential‑stealing sites to ransomware drop‑offs. Affected victims included small‑ and medium‑sized businesses, nonprofit organizations, large corporations and government bodies, underscoring the operation’s extensive reach.

Phishing continues to be a leading gateway for cybercrime, and the busted service operated as a “mail‑as‑a‑service” platform that other criminals could lease to scale their attacks. By offering dependable, high‑throughput delivery, the network lowered the entry barrier for less‑skilled actors and boosted the overall volume of malicious traffic online.

Authorities caution that although the infrastructure has been shut down, the overall threat will not vanish. Ongoing probes aim to track down and charge the individuals behind the service, and officials recommend that organisations implement multi‑factor authentication, staff training, and strong email filtering to curb future phishing attempts.
