The latest expansions have been concluding the multiverse‑shattering Omenpath saga, ending with the Reality Fracture set that features Jace of the Echoverse extending his sway over the plane—a motif reinforced by the newly introduced Empower Jace mechanic.

A top priority for Verhey is avoiding the infamous “five‑color soup.” Bringing in characters and ideas from other worlds frequently suggests multicolored cards, yet saturating a set with them could upset the fragile equilibrium that supports competitive play. Consequently, the design crew enforces tight caps on the number of multicolored cards and thoughtfully ties each to a distinct, purposeful color identity.
