Founder of Empire Market Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison

A federal panel sentenced Raheim Hamilton, a 30‑year‑old who co‑founded the now‑defunct Empire Market, to 40 years behind bars; the site had been among the most high‑profile dark‑web drug markets in recent years.

Earlier this year Hamilton pleaded guilty to a drug‑conspiracy charge and, under the plea deal, agreed to forfeit over $100 million in Bitcoin plus several Virginia real‑estate holdings that investigators tied to the venture.

Running on the Tor network, Empire Market was noted for its broad inventory of illegal drugs and drew tens of thousands of users globally. At its height the site processed millions of dollars in sales, using cryptocurrency to mask the money trail.

The ruling caps a joint law‑enforcement operation involving the FBI, DEA and overseas partners. In a coordinated raid, officials shut down the marketplace, detained multiple administrators and confiscated digital wallets containing substantial cryptocurrency holdings.

Confiscating more than $100 million in Bitcoin represents one of the biggest crypto forfeitures linked to a darknet prosecution, highlighting investigators’ expanding capacity to track and seize digital assets. The action sends a stark warning that blockchain anonymity is waning.

Although Hamilton’s conviction could discourage some prospective operators, analysts point out that the dark‑web landscape remains robust, with fresh sites constantly appearing. Still, the severe sentence demonstrates the U.S. courts’ readiness to levy heavy punishments on individuals who enable massive online drug trafficking, and it may shape upcoming prosecutions as law‑enforcement keeps pursuing illegal crypto‑driven commerce.
