FBI Attributes $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Heist to North Korean Hackers

The FBI has openly connected a huge crypto robbery to individuals associated with North Korea, stating that about $6.3 billion was taken from Binance on Oct. 29. The agency labeled the case with the internal identifier "TraderTraitor" and noted that the culprits transferred the stolen funds into Ethereum prior to arranging further moves.

The bureau says the hackers took advantage of a flaw in Binance’s system that let them swap numerous tokens for Ethereum, a more liquid and heavily traded cryptocurrency. Shifting the proceeds into Ethereum enabled the thieves to mask their tracks and quickly off‑load the assets across multiple exchanges.

The Lazarus Group, North Korea’s cyber‑warfare arm, has a track record of hitting crypto services to fund the regime’s sanction‑busting efforts. Notable examples are the 2019 $40 million heist from Japan’s Coincheck exchange and the 2021 Poly Network breach that yielded nearly $600 million. Should the Binance incident be verified, it would eclipse those prior attacks and highlight the increasing sophistication of government‑backed cybercrime.

Binance, which tops the list of crypto exchanges by trading volume, has withheld specific technical details about the intrusion yet affirmed its collaboration with law‑enforcement bodies worldwide to track the money. The firm indicated that it temporarily suspended some trading features on the compromised accounts and will inform affected users in line with regulatory obligations.

The bureau’s disclosure comes as the crypto industry faces intensified examination over its exposure to massive thefts and money‑laundering. U.S. and foreign regulators have been urging tighter compliance rules, and this case could speed up demands for compulsory reporting of suspicious activity and stronger security audits for exchanges. Although the probe remains active, the FBI said it is still watching the transferred Ethereum for any further movement, implying that more illicit actions may follow the original robbery.
