Fall Night Sky Delivers Meteor Showers, a Supermoon and Planetary Highlights
Throughout the autumn months, observers in the Northern Hemisphere can look forward to a busy schedule of night‑time spectacles, including multiple meteor showers, a vivid supermoon and several planetary alignments between September and November.
The first major show will be the Orionids, a comet‑derived stream that reaches its maximum around October 21. With its radiant set in Orion, clear, moonless skies should reveal as many as 20 meteors per hour. The particles zip through the atmosphere at about 66 km s⁻¹, producing bright, swift streaks that often leave short after‑glows.
Later that month, the Draconids will flash across the sky on the night of October 8‑9. Although traditionally modest, the 2024 outburst is forecast to produce 10‑15 meteors per hour for observers away from city lights. Originating from comet 21P/Giacobini‑Zinner, these meteors move more slowly, giving viewers a chance to spot faint, lingering glows.
Mid‑November brings the Leonids, a shower renowned for occasional spectacular storms. The 2024 peak, expected around November 17, should deliver roughly 10 meteors per hour, but a full Moon will wash out the fainter fireballs while the brighter ones remain visible.
The most picture‑friendly event of the season is the November supermoon on the night of November 14. Because the Moon will be near perigee—the closest point to Earth in its orbit—it will appear up to 14 % larger and 30 % brighter than a normal full Moon, making it an excellent subject for casual observers and photographers, especially against the early‑rising Milky Way.
Autumn also offers a prime window for planetary viewing. Jupiter and Saturn will rise higher each evening, and Mercury will break free from solar glare in early November, presenting a rare chance to see the “evening star” shortly after sunset. All three planets sit close to the ecliptic, so they are readily spotted with the naked eye or a modest telescope.
To get the most out of these displays, experts recommend traveling to dark sites with little artificial light, allowing the Milky Way’s dense core to become visible as early as late August and stay prominent through October. Consulting local weather reports and using astronomy apps to time each event can further boost the odds of a successful observation. As the season unfolds, the mix of meteor showers, a brilliant supermoon and clear planetary views reinforces why autumn is a beloved time for amateur astronomers, offering a series of sky‑watching moments that link modern enthusiasts to a tradition spanning cultures and centuries.
