Eye Doctor Predicts Cataract Surgery Will Become Standard on Lunar and Martian Missions
A top eye surgeon, whose lifelong passion for space began in childhood, asserts that cataract operations will soon have to be a standard medical provision for astronauts traveling beyond low Earth orbit.
Addressing a recent aerospace health symposium, the doctor noted that as we ready ourselves for a lasting foothold on the Moon and eventual crewed trips to Mars, the possibility of cataract development among crew cannot be dismissed. He maintained that long‑term cosmic‑radiation exposure together with microgravity‑driven physiological shifts form an ideal breeding ground for lens clouding.
Space travel already poses distinctive eye‑related problems. Research conducted aboard the International Space Station has recorded vision‑altering disorders tied to fluid redistribution and elevated intracranial pressure, and NASA’s records reveal a greater rate of retinal defects among crews on extended missions. Although cataracts are usually linked to aging, the sped‑up degeneration of eye tissue in space—caused by radiation‑triggered oxidative stress—could elevate the condition to a mission‑critical health issue.
Carrying out precise ocular surgery in microgravity introduces serious technical challenges. Standard operating microscopes, fluid‑handling equipment, and even simple sterile zones operate differently without gravity’s pull. The surgeon pointed to current investigations into small, self‑sufficient surgical kits and robotic support that might enable a qualified crew member—or a remotely directed device—to treat lens clouding while preserving mission safety.
Getting ready for these operations carries wider consequences for the design of crewed exploration infrastructure. Lunar bases and Martian settlements will have to house medical modules capable of eye procedures, and planners will need to account for crew training, spare components, and backup schedules. While tele‑medicine connections to Earth specialists can aid diagnosis, the communication delay to Mars—up to 22 minutes each way—implies that certain surgeries will need to be performed autonomously.
NASA together with global partners is already financing research to assess the practicality of performing cataract removal in space, including trials of phacoemulsification tools adapted for microgravity. The surgeon’s caution intensifies the need for these projects, highlighting that as human spaceflight reaches farther, the medical equipment required to keep astronauts healthy must evolve accordingly.
