DNA Evidence Shows Western Farming Reached Gansu via Cultural Exchange, Not Mass Migration

A recent interdisciplinary study of ancient DNA extracted from human remains in Gansu province, China, reveals that western farming arrived without a substantial wave of newcomers. The genetic profiles of the examined individuals stay closely tied to indigenous groups, implying that agricultural methods were chiefly transmitted culturally.

The team integrated genome sequencing of bones dating to the Neolithic and early Bronze Age with archaeological surveys of burial contexts and isotopic diet analyses. DNA results demonstrate uninterrupted maternal and paternal lineages throughout the period, whereas artifacts—including stone implements and pottery designs—exhibit unmistakable western Eurasian farming influences.

These results dispute the traditional demic diffusion model that attributes Eurasian agricultural spread to large-scale migrations of farming populations. Rather, the evidence favors a picture where native hunter‑gatherers incorporated crops and associated technologies via trade routes and direct social interaction.

Situated on the historic Hexi Corridor, Gansu has long functioned as a bridge linking China’s core to the Central Asian steppes. Its strategic locale turned it into a natural crossroads for varied populations in the Neolithic, and the latest data refine our view of the pathways through which concepts and commodities traversed the region.

Excavated burial customs at the sites further highlight this cultural fusion. Certain tombs hold typical western Eurasian grave goods, whereas others preserve local ritual features, pointing to a slow assimilation of foreign influences instead of a complete cultural overhaul.

Showing that farming expertise could disseminate without demographic turnover, the study revises our perception of early socioeconomic shifts in East Asia. It also echoes recent work from other marginal areas that stress exchange networks as drivers of agricultural spread.

The researchers acknowledge that further sampling in adjacent provinces and finer‑grained radiocarbon dating are required to pinpoint the precise routes and chronology of these exchanges. Still, the present findings highlight the value of interdisciplinary methods for rebuilding prehistoric human dynamics.
