Disney to Hire Most of Character.AI Team Following Startup’s Bankruptcy
Disney said Monday it will extend job offers to most of the staff of chatbot startup Character.AI, which entered bankruptcy earlier this week. The decision aligns with the media giant’s push to strengthen its generative AI capabilities, a field it deems essential for future content and guest experiences.
Founded in 2020, Character.AI quickly attracted notice for its chatbots that mimic human personalities. Its swift expansion brought aboard a skilled roster of engineers, researchers and product designers, many of whom Disney is now courting as it launches its own AI programs.
Karandeep Anand, who served as Character.AI’s chief executive officer, has been named Disney’s inaugural chief technology officer in a related move. His shift to the role highlights Disney’s strategy to internalize seasoned AI knowledge rather than depend exclusively on outside suppliers.
Analysts observe that hiring talent instead of acquiring technology assets mirrors a wider pattern among major media companies. By adding an existing group of AI experts, Disney aims to speed up initiatives ranging from interactive theme‑park experiences to AI‑powered script‑analysis tools.
Although Disney has not disclosed the precise headcount that will transition, it has signaled that the bulk of Character.AI’s workforce will qualify for new roles. This plan should give continuity to employees who might otherwise endure extended joblessness after the bankruptcy filing.
Experts argue that Disney’s bold recruitment could become a model for other entertainment firms facing the fast‑moving AI landscape. As AI transforms storytelling and audience engagement, securing elite talent may prove pivotal for preserving a competitive edge. The forthcoming phase will involve folding the hires into Disney’s current research units and outlining the scope of upcoming AI‑centric projects.
