Cologne Authorities Investigate Robot Controlled by Teens Over Alleged Minor Assault

A criminal probe has been opened by Cologne officials after a 16‑year‑old girl said a robot wearing a gold chain made contact with her that may amount to sexual assault. Police indicate that two teenagers were behind the robot’s operation.

She explained that the robot came up to her in a city public space and touched her in a way she deemed unwanted. The remotely‑controlled device was distinguished by its gold chain, a feature that allowed investigators to single it out amid the increasing variety of custom‑built bots favored by hobbyists.

Among German young people, especially in cities, remote‑controlled robots have turned into a popular hobby, supported by maker spaces and internet forums that enable the building of ever more advanced machines. Although most builds aim at fun or competition, this case underscores the potential for abuse and sparks debate over supervision and responsible usage.

German legislation treats sexual crimes gravely, no matter the method employed. Investigators will examine if the teens can be prosecuted for conduct carried out via the robot, a legal gray zone with few precedents yet attracting growing scrutiny as the line between digital and physical actions fades.

Police representatives stressed that the probe remains in its initial phase and they have not indicated if charges will be pursued. Authorities are analysing video recordings, robot logs, and witness statements to gauge the scope of the alleged assault and to pinpoint the operators.

The matter emerges as European lawmakers and tech groups are deliberating rules for autonomous and remotely‑operated devices. Depending on the findings, Cologne’s inquiry may shape future regulations intended to curb comparable abuse of consumer‑grade robotics, and could also encourage parents and teachers to talk about responsible tech use with youth.
