First reported in field studies many decades ago, the behavior still puzzles researchers since it seems to contradict the survival‑oriented demands of life in the wild.

Observations from several long‑term African field sites reveal an identical trend: a mother softly holds, grooms, and occasionally carries the dead baby, frequently unwilling to let go even though the infant provides no sustenance. This conduct is not confined to one group; it has been noted in both common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and their close kin, bonobos (Pan paniscus), indicating it could be a genus‑wide characteristic.

A number of interpretations have been offered. One perspective highlights the powerful mother‑infant connection, contending that the emotional tie endures beyond death and drives ongoing caregiving. A second theory posits that the mothers do not fully comprehend death, viewing the infant as merely a temporarily disabled offspring. Further suggestions invoke social roles—like broadcasting bereavement to the troop—or practical motives such as hygiene, with the mother possibly attempting to shield the corpse from parasites.

Though speculation is abundant, few of these proposals have undergone systematic, quantitative evaluation. The bulk of published work depends on anecdotal reports or limited‑sample observations, creating a divide between narrative accounts and solid scientific proof. Without uniform data gathering, pinpointing which variables—like the infant’s age at death or the mother’s reproductive background—most affect ICC duration remains challenging.

New initiatives seek to bridge this void by aggregating extensive datasets from multiple sites and employing statistical modeling to evaluate rival hypotheses. Monitoring precisely how long mothers keep the bodies, the state of the remains, and related social actions enables researchers to discern whether emotional bonds, cognitive misinterpretations, or alternative factors best account for the observed pattern.

The significance of this work reaches beyond primatology. Gaining insight into how non‑human apes react to death may shed light on the evolutionary origins of grief, mourning, and empathy in humans. Should the conduct stem from emotional mechanisms akin to those driving human bereavement, it would offer a unique glimpse into the shared affective continuum among species.

Upcoming studies are expected to integrate hormonal profiling, neuroimaging where possible, and comparative work with other mammals that display corpse‑related actions. As evidence builds, scientists anticipate shifting from mere descriptive intrigue to a more definitive understanding of why certain ape mothers cling to their deceased young, and what this reveals about the cognitive and emotional abilities of our nearest living relatives.
