Canva Cuts 22% of Workforce Amid Slowing Growth

On Thursday, the Australian design service Canva announced it will lay off over 1,200 employees — about 22 % of its worldwide workforce — attributing the move to a deceleration in its growth path. Executives called this the company's most challenging year since its 2012 debut, and the cuts will touch staff in product, engineering and support roles across all locations.

The platform, which reached a multi‑billion‑dollar valuation thanks to its freemium approach and fast‑growing user community, had consistently reported double‑digit revenue gains year over year. Yet analysts point to a harsher macro‑economic climate, lower ad budgets, and mounting competition from players like Adobe Express and Visme as factors chipping away at that pace.

Observers note that the reduction mirrors a wider pattern among fast‑growing tech companies that ramped up hiring during the pandemic but are now confronting a more restrained market. “When funding dries up and customers pull back, firms that grew quickly must reevaluate staffing to safeguard cash flow,” said a senior analyst at a boutique research firm.

Company leaders stressed that the downsizing aims to simplify operations and redirect resources toward core product development. Canva intends to uphold its remote‑first policy and, per an internal memo, will offer severance packages, career‑transition support, and ongoing health benefits to those impacted.

Investors, who have seen Canva’s valuation rise to roughly $40 billion, are expected to examine the decision closely. Though the cuts mark a slowdown in expansion, they also indicate a strategic pivot toward lasting profitability. Analysts will watch how Canva redeploys its remaining workforce and whether it can reignite growth in a post‑pandemic environment that now rewards efficiency over rapid scaling.
