Brad Smith of Microsoft Urges Worldwide AI Regulation, Cites UK's Prime Position

At a recent forum, Microsoft president Brad Smith cautioned that AI today enjoys far fewer protections than ordinary goods like milk, highlighting the pressing requirement for a coordinated global regulatory approach. He noted that the swift rollout of generative‑AI applications across sectors has outstripped existing legal structures, leaving a void that could subject societies to unforeseen damage.

He called on governments around the world to collaborate on a core set of principles covering topics such as data privacy, algorithmic bias and the deployment of AI in disinformation efforts. Smith warned that isolated national measures could fracture the market, forcing firms to contend with a bewildering array of standards that might curb innovation and competition.

When discussing possible champions for the initiative, Smith identified the United Kingdom as being in a “best position” to lead worldwide AI governance. The UK has already opened multiple public consultations on AI safety, funded research centres, and expressed readiness to work with European and Commonwealth allies. He argued that the nation’s regulatory drive, together with its robust tech industry, could provide a template for other countries aiming to reconcile innovation with public safety.

Smith’s appeal for stronger supervision comes as a series of high‑profile AI mishaps—deep‑fake videos propagating false information and algorithmic systems yielding biased results in hiring and credit scoring—have captured attention. Analysts point out that although regions like the European Union have rolled out extensive AI laws, numerous other areas still lack definitive rules. His comments echo an expanding agreement among technology executives that self‑regulation is insufficient.

Looking forward, Smith said Microsoft plans to back any forthcoming global standards by adjusting its product development practices accordingly. He added that the firm will work with legislators to guarantee that any regulations are technically viable and do not impede legitimate AI applications. As discussions heat up, the focus on the UK’s strategy could influence upcoming diplomatic negotiations, possibly yielding a multilateral framework that sets the worldwide benchmark for AI governance.
