Bogus WatchGuard VPN Page Steals Admin Credentials, Gives Hackers Direct Network Entry

Researchers have identified a fake site posing as WatchGuard’s VPN download page that is pilfering admin credentials from business users, thereby creating a backdoor into their networks. The page delivers a genuine, digitally signed VPN client, which prevents suspicion and lets the attackers quietly record the confidential login information.

The campaign was linked to a phishing page that deliberately declined the initial login attempt, compelling users to submit their credentials again. This intentional refusal makes victims re‑type their usernames, passwords and VPN server details, which are then captured by the threat actors.

The exfiltrated data comprises complete administrator usernames and passwords together with the exact VPN server endpoints employed by the affected firms. Armed with this information, attackers can sidestep ordinary perimeter controls and obtain unrestricted remote entry to internal assets, possibly elevating privileges or siphoning data.

WatchGuard, a prominent network‑security vendor, verified that the program offered on the bogus site is genuine and properly signed, highlighting the campaign’s sophistication. The perpetrators depend on users’ confidence in official binaries to mask their malicious goals, illustrating the expanding difficulty of credential‑theft schemes that weaponize legitimate software.

Specialists recommend that companies implement multi‑factor authentication for VPN connections, conduct frequent audits of privileged accounts, and confirm download origins via official channels or trusted repositories. While the probe remains ongoing, security teams are urging businesses to examine recent VPN login logs for irregularities that might signal a breach.
