Apple Sets New Disclosure Requirement for Dating and AI Companion Apps
Apple said that creators of dating‑type applications must now indicate if their service links actual people, artificial‑intelligence agents, or a mix of both, allowing Apple to apply suitable age classifications.
This amendment broadens the current App Store rating system—already used to label apps featuring violence, gambling or sexual content—by introducing a separate bucket for dating and AI companionship, intended to provide parents and guardians with clearer direction.
The rule comes at a time when AI‑crafted personas and chatbots are increasingly showing up in social and dating platforms. Detractors caution that youths might encounter engagements that obscure the distinction between genuine human connections and algorithmic simulations, sparking worries over privacy and consent.
Developers must revise their app metadata in the App Store Connect dashboard to declare the type of connections their product offers. Supplying incorrect details could lead to the app’s removal or a higher age rating, reducing its storefront visibility.
Analysts suggest the mandate may compel dating services to disclose AI involvement more openly and could trigger a reassessment of age‑verification practices. Apple has not revealed an exact enforcement date, but anticipates compliance ahead of the upcoming quarterly review period.
