Apple Revises App Store Policy, Bars Users Under 18 from Dating and AI Romance Apps

Apple has amended its App Store rules, now obliging developers to assign an 18+ rating to any app that offers dating functions or AI‑powered companions with sexual or romantic material, thereby blocking minors from installing such applications.

Outlined in the newest App Store review guide, the updated policy requires developers to tag their software as 18+ whenever it enables romantic matchmaking or provides AI conversations containing intimate or sexual content. Apps that do not comply risk being taken down from the store.

The adjustment comes as scrutiny intensifies over how tech platforms expose youths to adult‑focused media. Authorities across several jurisdictions have called for stricter age‑verification protocols, and Apple has already hardened its policies for gambling, alcohol and tobacco‑related applications.

Leading dating services—including Tinder, Bumble and Hinge—as well as emerging AI companion apps, must update their metadata and may have to introduce stronger age‑gate systems. The rules also demand explicit labeling and, in some instances, extra verification before a download can be finalized.

Critics caution that the ban might reduce access to safe, moderated venues for teens looking for relationships, whereas supporters contend it protects younger individuals from potentially exploitative or unsuitable engagements. This discussion mirrors wider anxieties about AI’s place in personal connections and the adequacy of current parental controls.

Apple has not announced a precise rollout date, though it usually allows developers a few weeks to modify their products. Analysts predict the move could establish a benchmark for future content limits as AI‑generated companions grow more advanced and pervasive.
