Apple Increases Minimum Age for Dating Apps and AI Chat Companions to 18

Apple said it will lift the minimum age for both dating apps and a wide range of AI‑powered companion chatbots to 18, intending to enhance safeguards for younger users on the App Store.

This adjustment modifies Apple’s current age‑rating system, which already requires developers to assign a rating that reflects an app’s content. With the new policy, any application that enables romantic matchmaking must carry an 18+ label, even if it previously held a lower rating.

At the same time, Apple will automatically assign an 18+ rating to the majority of AI companion chatbots. The move stems from the firm’s view that these bots frequently produce adult‑oriented conversation, covering sexual or emotionally intimate subjects, and thus should be limited to adults.

Company spokespeople highlighted worries that minors could be exposed to unsuitable material, along with wider concerns about data privacy and the risk of manipulation in AI‑driven interactions. By tightening age restrictions, Apple hopes to lower the chance that under‑age users encounter exploitative or psychologically damaging content.

The mandate will force developers to update onboarding processes, introduce stronger age‑verification systems, and, where necessary, redesign interfaces to meet the higher bar. Analysts observe that this could dent the earnings of smaller developers who depend on a youthful audience, whereas larger companies may be better equipped to shoulder the compliance expenses.

Apple’s rule follows a broader movement by major platforms to tighten youth protections, driven by increasing regulatory pressure in the United States and Europe. Legislators and consumer‑advocacy groups have been urging tighter oversight of digital services that target or draw in minors.

Developers have been granted a brief period to adjust their apps before the new standards roll out, with Apple planning to enforce them via its regular App Store review cycle. Observers will monitor closely how the regulation reshapes the mobile dating and AI companionship market in the coming months.
