Amsterdam Data Center Demonstration Underscores Rising European Resistance to Tech Growth

Over a hundred protesters assembled at a Microsoft data centre on the outskirts of Amsterdam on Saturday, breaching security fences in a coordinated demonstration that forms part of a broader wave of actions across Europe this weekend.

The organizers, who wish to remain anonymous, said their primary concern is the rapid spread of massive data facilities and their environmental impact. Demonstrators marched from a nearby public square, displayed banners demanding stricter regulation of digital infrastructure, and briefly occupied the perimeter fence before police escorted them away.

The Amsterdam action mirrors similar gatherings in cities such as Paris, Berlin and Dublin, where activists have targeted the expansion plans of major cloud providers. While the size of each event varies, they all focus on data‑centre energy consumption, electricity sourcing, and potential effects on local ecosystems.

Microsoft, which has been enlarging its European cloud footprint to meet growing demand for AI and other services, has previously emphasized its commitment to renewable energy and carbon‑negative goals. The company’s spokesperson declined to comment on the specific incident, restating broader sustainability pledges and noting that the site complies with Dutch environmental regulations.

Environmental groups warn that the cumulative effect of dozens of new facilities could outpace Europe’s progress toward climate targets. According to a recent European Environmental Agency report, data centres now account for roughly 2 percent of the EU’s total electricity use, a figure projected to rise sharply if current expansion trends continue unchecked.

Authorities in the Netherlands have opened a formal inquiry into the security breach, but have not indicated any intention to halt construction. As the weekend’s protests draw to a close, activists say the demonstrations are intended to keep pressure on policymakers and tech firms to adopt more transparent, sustainable practices before further sites are approved.
