American Express Says Mobile App Glitch Caused Recent Outage, Not Data Breach
American Express said the recent disruptions to its mobile app and online banking were not due to a security flaw, refuting early speculation that the outages could have compromised customer data.
The problems, which started earlier this week, prevented some cardholders from signing in, checking balances, or making transactions. Users encountered error messages and long load times, leading to a surge of complaints on social media and consumer forums.
In a short statement, the financial‑services firm said its internal review eliminated any breach or exploit as the reason for the degraded service. While it confirmed the cause was technical, Amex did not reveal the exact origin of the fault, adding that it is still collecting detailed information.
Analysts point out that such outages can arise from many causes, such as software updates that trigger unexpected bugs, server capacity limits during peak periods, or issues with third‑party infrastructure providers. The absence of a clear explanation has spurred additional speculation among users, many of whom fear possible exposure of sensitive account data.
American Express is a pillar of the worldwide payments network, handling billions of dollars in transactions annually. Even brief service lapses can affect merchants, disturb cash flow, and diminish consumer trust, particularly as digital banking reliability becomes an expected norm.
The firm said it will keep a close watch on its systems, implement any needed fixes, and update customers as further details emerge. Regulators usually monitor extended or repeated outages at major banks, though no formal investigations have been announced so far.
