Amazon to Phase Out Fire Tablets, Introduces Android-Powered Alexa Tablets

Amazon said it will end production of its Fire tablets and will roll out a fresh lineup called Alexa Tablets. Panos Panay, Amazon’s head of consumer electronics, confirmed the plan in a Bloomberg interview, noting that the shift answers shopper requests for a more open and recognizable operating system.

The upcoming devices will operate on a regular Android build instead of Amazon’s custom Fire OS. Using this widely‑used platform will give owners full access to the Google Play Store, something the Fire series never offered due to its reliance on Amazon’s curated app store.

First launched more than ten years ago, Fire tablets have been marketed as inexpensive substitutes for mainstream tablets, tightly linked to Amazon services like Prime Video, Kindle and the Alexa voice assistant. Though they have appealed to budget‑conscious shoppers, reviewers have pointed out shortcomings in app selection and performance relative to rival Android and iOS tablets.

Analysts view the change as a component of Amazon’s larger plan to deepen its presence in the fiercely contested tablet arena. Tying its hardware to the Android ecosystem is intended to attract users who value Alexa’s convenience yet desire the freedom of a complete app store. This transition could also streamline Amazon’s software development and support, focusing its resources on one broadly used operating system.

Amazon has yet to reveal a schedule for retiring the Fire line or the precise specs of the forthcoming Alexa Tablets. Panay did mention that the new models aim to satisfy customers who have been calling for a more open platform. The shift implies Amazon will keep capitalizing on its cloud and voice‑assistant strengths while delivering a more traditional tablet experience, a blend that could alter its standing in the consumer‑electronics market.
