Airbnb Bans Hosts From Making Guests Wash Dishes

Airbnb said it is changing its rules to forbid hosts from requiring short‑term guests to perform tasks that would normally be done by a hired cleaning crew, beginning with the most frequent demand: dishwashing.

The adjustment follows numerous complaints from travelers who said they were expected to leave the kitchen immaculate even though they had already paid a cleaning fee. Under the revised policy, any duty that a professional cleaning service would ordinarily handle is no longer deemed a reasonable request of guests.

Company representatives noted that the aim is to draw a clearer line between services paid for through the platform and the duties of the guest. By tightening the definition of “reasonable requests,” Airbnb hopes to lessen friction and make sure the price shown to guests reflects the level of service they will receive.

Hosts have reacted with mixed feelings. Some view the rule as an unwarranted intrusion into their property‑management practices, claiming they count on guests to speed up turnover. Others appreciate the clarification, pointing out that it shields them from poor reviews that stem from guests feeling treated as unpaid cleaners.

For travelers, the change eliminates a source of confusion that sometimes sparked uncomfortable confrontations. Guests can now book with more confidence that the cleaning fee they pay truly covers the post‑stay cleaning, without any extra labor expected from them.

Airbnb says it will enforce the rule via its review system and will act against listings that keep demanding prohibited chores. The measure adds to a wider push by the platform to standardize expectations and could set a benchmark for other short‑term rental services.
